FAYETTE COUNTY, PA โ Fayette County drivers should continue to expect construction activity, lane restrictions and occasional delays as PennDOT's 2026 bridge-preservation program moves forward.
The current program includes work on bridges carrying several major highways, including Routes 51, 21, 40 and 119.
Those highways serve as important transportation corridors for residents traveling to work, school, shopping and medical appointments, as well as for commercial traffic moving through the region.
Bridge Preservation
Much of the work involves epoxy overlays and related improvements designed to protect bridge decks and extend the useful life of existing infrastructure.
While construction can create short-term headaches for motorists, preventative maintenance is generally preferable to allowing infrastructure to deteriorate to the point where major reconstruction or replacement becomes necessary.
Drivers should expect traffic controls and lane restrictions in affected areas.
A weekend detour is also planned in connection with work involving Route 51.
Layton Bridge Project
Another major project receiving attention is the replacement of the Layton Bridge.
Construction activity associated with the project can affect Layton Road, Tunnel Road and the Great Allegheny Passage.
Intermittent traffic stoppages associated with blasting and other construction activities may last for several minutes.
Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians should obey posted signs and directions from flaggers when traveling through affected areas.
Give Yourself Extra Time
Construction schedules can change because of weather, contractor operations and other circumstances.
Drivers should allow additional travel time, slow down in work zones and remain alert for workers and changing traffic patterns.
Fayette County Discussions will continue tracking major PennDOT projects and sharing significant closure, detour and traffic information with local residents.
